Cataloging Overview
Item Cataloging

Item cataloging is the process of adding items to pre-existing records in the Balsam catalog.

Copy Cataloging

Copy cataloging is the process of finding pre-existing records and importing them into the Balsam catalog using Z39.50. The primary source of records in the US is OCLC.

Original Cataloging

Original cataloging is the process of creating a record for an item that has no pre-existing record in Z39.50. Under the Cataloging -> Create New MARC Record tab there are prebuilt MARC templates for you to choose from. Below are guides on how to fill in those template. This should be done with great care and attention to detail. The Cataloging Committee is happy to assist.
